Behavior & Training

Bringing a new companion animal into your home is a major adjustment for both your new pet and your family. This is why every Rancho Coastal Humane Society adopter can take advantage of our post-adoption support services. We want to make lifelong matches and give you the tools and resources you need to help make that happen.

For dogs adopted from Rancho Coastal, you can take advantage of three in-home training consultations with our Behavior & Training Team.

Post-adoption support is also available virtually for our cat and rabbit adopters.

Training Tips

At Rancho Coastal, we believe in Positive Reinforcement Training. This is a reward-based method that does not include force, or intimidation. When you’re looking for a trainer, we recommend asking if they use Positive Reinforcement methods before signing up for sessions.

To search for Positive Reinforcement Trainers in your area through the Karen Pryor Academy. Always reconfirm with the trainer that their methods are positive reinforcement based.

In the meantime, here are some helpful tips we’ve gathered from our Behavior & Training Team.

What to Do If You’ve Lost Your Pet?

First, don’t panic. Search your immediate area. Contact your friends and neighbors to help in the search. Leverage your social media channels to spread the word. If your pet has a microchip, contact the microchip company to report your pet missing.

Rancho Coastal is not able to take in strays or lost pets. However, we do take a record of lost pets and can help match a pet to an owner if someone calls after finding a stray pet. Call our Front Desk to make a report 760-753-6413.

Search for lost pets at San Diego County Animal Control shelters and through San Diego Humane Society.

Check the Petco Love Lost Database.

Petco Love Lost is a free and easy way to search 200K+ lost and found pets to help them return home. The database includes pets reported by individuals as well as thousands of shelter partners across the country. By uploading a photo of your lost or found pet and reporting it in our system, you make that pet visible to pet parents searching for their pet – making happy pet reunions just a few clicks away. Create a report here.

Relinquishments and
Rehoming a Pet

We understand that sometimes it’s not always possible to keep a pet. Rancho Coastal always takes back animals that were originally adopted through us no matter how much time has passed. Please contact our customer service team for more information and to discuss the process: frontdesk@sdpets.org.

Rancho Coastal is unable to accept any animals other than those previously adopted through our shelter.

Please note, we cannot take in same-day relinquishments, even if returning a Rancho Coastal animal.

If you do need to rehome a pet not adopted by Rancho Coastal, try listing your pet on Adopt-a-Pet.

Dogs on Deployment

Dogs on Deployment is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting military, veteran, and first responder pet owners. They connect eligible pet parents in need with volunteers for temporary pet boarding during service commitments or hardships—offering them peace of mind and preventing unnecessary pet relinquishment. They also offer financial assistance grants for veterinary care, military relocations, and spay/neuter services.
